Christmas in New Zealand

Although we couldn’t spend these days with our beloved ones, the Christmas holidays were pretty sweet. Mike and his parents Kathy and Paul went out on their way to make it great for us, as if we were part of their family. There were even presents for us under the Christmas tree! As it is tradition we handed over the presents in the morning of 25th December and afterwards we had a nice feast with hundreds of desserts. Like paradise!

After that we went down to the beach to walk for a bit, even though the wind was pretty strong and the waves were enormous. When we came to the beach a seal emerged of the water and was moving towards us. Awwww, that was funny and cute! 😀 When we came by on our way back it was still laying and enjoying the sun.

Also Kathy and Mike took us to a horse race which is quite a family event during Christmas time and in general a social event. For every round we guessed which horse would win and in between we had a nice picknick. It was really entertaining to see how quick the horses storm into the finish.

We also played a lot and and various times Mike tried to teach us the national sport of New Zealand, Kricket. That is not an easy thing. After we had watched our first match and had had some nice beers with Mikes friend Nik, we walked home – on foot. We had decided to do that together, although it should be around 8 km. Mike said, it can’t be that long, “I know a shortcut”. 😀
The first 6 km were really great: The temperatures were okay (15 degrees?), the sky clear and the moon was shining bright. The view at Dunedin and the sea was gorgeous. On our way we met some sheep, cows, a hedgehog and a horse. Only the last kilometer was really bad: We had to walk down a hill and cross several fences, also barbwire. We should also mention that we were all just wearing flip flops and sandals. Well, it was somehow funny, and somehow not, but in the end we made it home and only with one (Alexandras, of course) toe. 😉
